Are you suppose to hold the power button?

I was wondering if you were suppose to hold the power button down for a bit since I noticed that it sometimes takes a few presses to shut the console off.

Are you meant to hold down the power button or press it until it shuts off?

I have been holding down the power button until it shuts off, but you can turn it off by pressing it multiple times too.

Re: Are you suppose to hold the power button?

Supposedly, you press the POWER button on the 3DS once to activate Sleep Mode and close software at the same time.  You can then press it again to shut the system off.  Does this work for you?  If it doesn't, then you may consider sending your 3DS in for repairs.  But of it doesn't bother you, then it's no big deal.

However, holding the button should be fine as well.

Since one of the firmware updates, the POWER button no longer activates Sleep Mode.

Ideally, you should push POWER button once, then select the power down option on the touch screen to power it off.  Holding the power button done activates an emergency power down and may result in loss of data if you do this at the wrong time.  I would only hold the power button down to turn it off if the 3DS crashes.

I tested this out a few times. It is possible, when the system is off at least, to hit the power button 100 times and it not turn on. It's all about the amount of pressure you apply to it, and it was not like this with the original firmware. One hard press is all it takes to turn the system on.

Even if this still worked, you are wrong. You used to be able to press the POWER button 1 time to take you to the POWER menu. You would then be able to tap Sleep Mode or Power Off.... THE WRONGNESS BURNS MY FACE!!!!! lol

Re: Are you suppose to hold the power button?

Briefly pressing the power button does nothing. This is probably a feature to prevent you from accidentally bumping the button. Holding the power button for a few seconds and releasing it presents the black screen with an explaination of Sleep Mode and how that differs from powering the system off. From this screen you can press the power button one more time or click the "Power Off" button on the touch screen. If you want to enter Sleep Mode you can simply close the system from the Home screen.

Holding it down for 1 second is sufficient.  If you hold it down for 3-4 seconds, it will just shut off.
