N3DS Warranty questions

Hello all. I am here today to ask a few questions about the Nintendo 3DS systems' warranty.

First off, I'll explain the issue I am having with the system.

Today, just like any other day, I grabbed my Nintendo 3DS (in it's case) and put it in my back pocket so I could possibly get StreetPass tags for the day. While heading out of my house, I figured I may as well take my mother's boyfriend's 3DS out too so we could both get tags. I put his 3DS in my other back pocket, but his doesn't have any type of case. Just a cleaning cloth to protect the top screen from getting scratches. Throughout the day I took out both 3DS systems to check on them (steps, tags, and all) and both systems were perfectly fine. When I finally came back home, I hooked my 3DS up to the charger and took the other 3DS to its owners room. I opened the system to run through the tags he had gotten, and to my surprise, the top screen had a small little crack on it. The screen still works, minus the fact the 3D looks odd now, but in the area with the crack there is a small black spot. I'm not sure how this happened, or what I can do to fix it, but all I know is that I must find a way to repair it since I damaged someone else's property. It *was* an accident, and I know it will sound crazy trying to explain what happened to it, but I just need a few questions answered first--

Okay, first question would be: On the "My Repairs" page on Nintendo.com, I checked the warranty on his 3DS. It's valid. But I noticed that the page said the warranty doesn't cover physical damage (such as cracked screens). Obviously there would be no exceptions, but what would I have to do in order to get this repaired?

My second question is a little more simple. Since it isn't *my* 3DS, would they still allow me to call in and try to send it in for repair since the owner lives in the same house as me, or would the owner have to call them?

^ This is a picture of the screen. I know it isn't top-quality, I took it with my phone, but as you can see, the damage isn't too terrible.
I just want to get it fixed. I feel really bad that this happened to the screen, but I honestly have no explanation as to how it happened, so all I can think of is getting it repaired.

What do you guys think?

If you need to set up a repair for a Nintendo game or console, you can contact the Nintendo in your region. If you live in North America, you'll have the best luck speaking to a rep using their toll-free hotline, which can be reached by dialing 1-800-255-3700. They would ask you some basic questions for information (name, address, what the problem is, etc.), give you details on the price it would cost for the repair, and ask you if you would like them to send you a shipping label via email or through actual mail. Once you have the shipping label, pack the item up (in the case of a system, removing any accessories such as wrist-straps, screen protectors, etc.), and ship it out. Generally, the normal turn around time for a repair is about 10 days, but depending on the repair in question, and if there is a holiday of somesort, that could cause the turn around time to take longer. However, do take note, the minimal repair figure will probably be around at least $75 USD.

As for your second question, I personally don't see why you shouldn't be able to set the repair up yourself.

Re: N3DS Warranty questions

Hmm... since you put the 3DS in your back pocket, you must be sitting on a seat and it would cause cracks. Next time DO NOT put the 3DS in the back pocket, the manual in the 3DS box even says that I think. There's an image stating that. NIGHTFIRE5 pretty much answered your questions, so yeah.http://www.cubed3.com/media/2011/February/3dshealthwarn.jpg
