Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

My Wii U can see my wireless network. When I select it and have it test connection, it fails every time. I've tried restarting the router, changing the security info, removing all security, and the Wii U will still refuse to connect.

I've also had it lockup when booting Black Ops 2 and I had to pull the power cord because even holding powere wouldn't turn off the system.

I am experiencing this problem, too. My other consoles and hand-helds can connect, but it is only the Wii U that cannot connect.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

Ok so far heres what works, entering in everything manually.

1. Go into connection types, Hit "Manual Configuration"

2. Input your SSID

3. Input the correct security type, this is key.

4. Put your password in properly

5. For ip address "Do not auto obtain".

6. open up cmd in your computer, type in ipconfig

7. Now input that ip address but add 10 to the last number so "192.168.0.1" will be entered as "192.168.0.11"

8. Enter the rest of your info inside such as subnet mask and default gateway exactly as you see it in your ipconfig.

9. Now hit next, hit configure now for your DNS.  When asked about DNS hit "Dont auto obtain".

10. For the first server put in 8.8.8.8

11. For the second server put in 8.8.4.4

12. Hit Next, when asked about a proxy hit no proxy

13. Leave mtu as the default

14. it should work, if not check the ip and that it is the internet ip + 10.  Good luck

What if you have a Mac? I tried typing in "ipconfig" using the Terminal application and it gave me an error message.

I have a Time Capsule running WPA2 security. Every other device I have in the house. 3DS, Xbox, PS3, iPad, iPhone, Galaxy Tab - they connect without an issue.

Nintendo really dropped the ball with this.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

For OSX, go to your network preferences and select the TCP/IP Pane. You're looking for Subnet mask and router addresses, the router is what the Wii U needs for the gateway setting.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

Had the same problem. Just got off the line with Nintendo Support. The answer is to go to your internet settings and change your password type from WEP to WPA2-PSK (AES) if you are using a motorolla surfboard. The Wii u seems to be automatically setting it up as a WEP. Change that, make sure your password is correct, and follow the manual IP / DNS input as listed above, and that should fix it.

I've been online before using a LAN adaptor at my dorm.  But now it's Summer and my LAN adaptor is broken. I go to my mom's house trying to connect wireless and I'm having the same problem connecting through Wifi.  I followed those directions, and it connected to the network device but it didn't connect to the internet.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

I have a Motorola SBG900 and I couldn't get it to work with the manual steps you guys listed, until I did the following:

1. Under the Gateway section of the SBG900 page, I had to also configure Port Forwarding, Port Triggers, and I setup a stactic dhcp lease. (not sure if all of these changes are necessary).
2. Inserted the DNS servers from the SBG900 Gateway, Status page. Instead of the Google DNS servers you listed, for the Connection Settings DNS information.
I can finally connect, and I am downloading the update slowly. The bar doesn't make any progress for awhile and you have to restart the update periodically.
Hope this helps someone else.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

I'd like to stress this more.

ADD 10 TO THE IPV4 NUMBER, NOT YOUR GATEWAY.

Worked after I did so, I kept adding 10 to the router IP.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

And just to explain what's going on with this IPV4 number:

You need to choose a unique address that isn't used by any other device on your network.

Only the last (4th) part of the address should change.

That number needs to be between 1 and 254 (inclusive) and can't be the same as the gateway/router address

or, as I said, the same as any other device's address.

Most people have fewer than 10 devices, so that's why adding 10 usually works fine.  You can add more,

so long as you don't exceed 254.

If you really want to be safe, you can check your router's DHCP configuration and see what range of numbers

it is using, and then choose a number that's not in that range (and still satisfies the other requirements

mentioned above).

For instance, if DHCP is configured to assign up to 50 addresses starting at 10, then you know that

addresses 10 - 59 might be taken up by DHCP, so you can safely use an address such as 100.

Of course, check with other network users and make sure they aren't also using a similar manual

address.  You can sometimes look at the router's list of LAN clients, though this might not always

be complete (it only shows devices that were recently active).

I am also having an issue connecting my Wii U Deluxe edition to the internet. I followed the directions as indicated here and I am still having issues connecting to the internet.  After running a connection test it passes connecting to the network and internet but fails when attempting to update the console software.

Any additional suggestions on how to fix this?  No issues with other wireless devices in the house.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

This is just not working for me !!!

Here's how my network is setup

SSID = Invisible (Also turned it on VISIBLE)

MAC Filtering = ON (Wii U MAC ADDRESS ADDED) >>> Tried it turned OFF

ALL IP's are manual ... EX: Default Gateway is 10.10.12.254

                                                             PC1 10.10.12.1

                                                             PC2 10.10.12.2

                                                             PC3 10.10.12.3

                                                             PS3 10.10.12.4

                                                              Wii 10.10.12.5

                                                   Cell Phone 10.10.12.6

                                                           Wii U 10.10.12.7 (Tried 10.10.12.11)

DNS = 10.10.12.254 (Tried the google ones 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and even my isp DNS)

Subnet = 255.255.255.0

Security = WPA / AES

Im on the third floor where i live and when i go all the way downstairs, my cell phone is still connected to the network.

With the Wii U which is 6 or 7 feet away from the router i can connect to the router (Green check mark) but the internet connection fails.

I'm actually having an issue where Miiverse and Eshop will just keep loading and loading and loading.  The web browswer works, but eshop often gives me a 111-9000 error, while Miiverse will often bring up these weirdly displayed hyperlink scripts for the forums but not let me click on anything.  Miiverse will also often drop me from my router and my router from the internet when trying to load up.  It's strange because its only happening with these applications so I'm not sure if I should try and change my network settings based on some of the feedback in this thread?  I was able to do the Day 1 patch and even update some games as well.

I have the same problem. My WiiU can connect to my modem/router (Actiontech GT724WG) but not to the internet. I've wasted a ridiculous amount of time on the phone with Nintendo tech support but they can't help. They blame my router (which I got from my ISP) and asked me to call my ISP-who couldn't help me.

Any suggestions? Is this a compatability issue which could be solved by just getting a different router?

if a wide array of other wi-fi enabled equipment works on your router, then it would be nintendo's fault. stick to your guns. nintendo needs to admit their wi-fi drivers are absolutely diabolical.

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/routers/index.jsp

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/routers/Actiontec/index.jsp

While "Actiontech" wireless routers have been tested and found to be compatible with Nintendo products, unfortunately your exact model number isn't listed, but the "701-WG" and "704-WG" are, so it could perhaps be some type of "driver" problem that MADEINBEATS eluded to.

But not with Nintendo's "wi-fi drivers", perhaps with your wireless router instead, so if the service representative didn't mention this and sorry if I am wasting more of your time, perhaps try updating the Actiontech GT724WG drivers to see if that might help.

But if still no luck, one way to test to see where the problem might be, with the Wii U itself, your wireless router, type of Internet, or something else with your connection set up, would be to take the Wii U to a friend or family member's home and see what happen when you connect to their Internet.

It might be worth trying, especially if they have a completely different set up than what you have, both in the wireless router/security and in the ISP that they might use.

I ended up solving the problem (so far) very simply. I changed the security setting on my router from WPA+WPA2 to just WPA.

Now couldn't Nintendo tech support have suggested the same thing?

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

I have tried everything under the sun to get the Wii U to connect to the Internet. It took hours just to get it configured to acknowledge my router. I managed to get it connected to the Internet by making my laptop a hotspot, but that’s incredibly slow and unreliable. I thought that if I could do that and get the update installed that maybe my wifi woes would be fixed, but alas – still nothing. I have done everything I can find online – manually entering the info, changing the DNS, messing with my router settings. The only thing I haven’t done is buy a LAN cable (well, I did, but it wasn’t recognized as one) to try it out wired.

Is there any other suggestions at all – anything – that anyone can think of? I have a Motorola SBG6580. I even turned off all other devices in my entire house and moved the Wii U to sit right next to the router and it still doesn’t connect. I get a different error code every time I try again (103-2001, 103-2004, etc.).

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

I read this post and solved the connection error to my router

HOWEVER I STILL CANNOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET?!?

I am using a Netgear router model CG3101D

router setting 'WPA auto'

On the Wii U I can only set WPA2-PSK[AES] or WPA-PSK[TKIP] etc but I guess WPA Auto will adjust?

I also disabled the firewall on my router temporarily without any luck.

I set all the manual settings as suggested (and with that I am now able to connect to the router at least)

I can also find the device in the connected devices list in my router setup.

The only thing I can see that is not compatible is MTU on router is set to '0' and on Wii U is 1500.

I cannot set the Wii U MTU to less than a certain number (I cannot remember exactly but something like 526 or 256)

I am reluctant to change too many settings on my router as I have 15 devices connected which are all working and I do not want to mess this up or have to reconfigure them all.

Any further help available??

Many thanks!

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

I also have the Motorol SBG6580 and had a ton of trouble getting internet connection, but after hours of reading these forums and trying everything I finally got it.  What everyone says in the posts above about entering the settings manually is correct, so follow those, but heres what I found to be the main problem;

When you type in your IP as 192.168.0.1 (or whatever yours may be), the feild auto-populates out to 3 digits, meaning that same number will show up as 192.168.000.001.    If you want 192.168.0.1, you need to enter each number so it reads 192.168.000.100.  This happens to the gateway too so make sure your typing this in correctly.  Adding the +10 may help, so in that case you would try 192.168.000.110, but you can really use anything.  I tried 192.168.000.250 and thats what worked for me.

As for the DNS, you can use the primary and secondary that you would find using ipconfig/all, but I just used one suggestion in a help post = 8.8.8.8 (008.008.008.008) and 8.8.4.4 (008.008.004.004)

Good Luck.

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

Ok. I really need help. I am ready to throw this system out the window. I cannot connect to the Internet at all. I don't know how many times I've tried this adding 10 to the ip, not adding 10, changing the dns numbers... 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, etc etc. I can't even get it to connect to the router. I've never even seen a green check mark! It doesn't even try to connect, just straight up red X within a second as soon as I configure all my info. I tried to add my MAC address of the Wii U to my router allow list, turned off the security on my router, etc. tried to connect it at a different house with a different Internet connection.... I don't know what else to try. It will connect through a hot spot on my phone but I can't do the huge first update through my phone without it taking days and racking up my cellphone bill. This is absolutely ridiculous. I don't understand why everything is so hard. Can't connect to the Internet, can't connect a simple second controller to the console (that is another story), nothing. I can connect my 3ds and Wii to the internet just fine so I know Nintendo can do better!. I just don't see the point of having a pretty much useless system... Yeah I can play my games but I want to enjoy downloads, apps, UPDATES would be the most beneficial. Sorry I am ranting but I can't believe how hard and how frustrating this is. If anyone has any tips for the Internet connection please help me. I have no idea what to do, I am going insane with this!

If I buy a Wii U LAN adapter will it work with the Wii U?

I am really sorry you are having so much trouble with your Wii U, perhaps since it sounds like you have tried most everything to get it to connect, you should give a call to Nintendo's 1-800-255-3700 (6 am ~ 7 pm Pacific, everyday) Customer Service number, and one of the service representatives will be able to do some over the phone troubleshooting that will hopefully determine what the problem is, and then patiently talk you through any needed steps to correct this.

And they will also be able to figure out why you are unable to connect a second controller to your console too.

I hope so too. I will give them a call tomorrow and see if they have any tricks up their sleeves. Thank you for replying!

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

None of these worked for me. I have an Xfinity router/modem. I've tried everything wether its adding +10 to the last numbers of the ip and making the DNS 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 and 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.2.2. None of these worked, and I'm suspecting that it could be the Wii U that's the problem since everything else can connect to my router but that. Any help?

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

My solution I kinda like gamedvs but not fully so u do all the following as gamedev said but for

The dns go to cmd and type ipconfig/all and look for dns servers and type them in for dns on the wiiu

You shold put you're dns not mine!!! If it doesn't work add 10 to your ip till it works

And ps I use a Cisco router model DCP 3825 if it still doesn't work well sorry I can't help with that

***Edited to remove DNS information.***

Re: Wii U cannot connect to WiFi

Does anyone think this is a result of the small update that happened a few days ago? My Wii U was working fine since I purchased it, until after the update.

It will NOT connect to my xfinity router now.

*update*

I downloaded an app called wifi analyzer on Google Play (android tablet).

I have a LOT of wifi networks in my neighborhood, so I changed the channel on the xfinity router to 11 (it was set to auto)

and my Wii U WILL connect to xfinity now. Maybe this will help some of you. Good luck!

*update*

Yeah my Wii U also hasn't been connecting to the internet ever since the new 3.0.1 update.
