Was playing Nintendo Land, and noticed the nintendo land icon had 2 coins on it from the Y menu; so clicked on it to try it out for the first time, and when it was about to start... it heard what sounded like "HORN" going off, the horn you would hear when the NUKES would be going off back in the day or a tornado siren.
view video to see what it sounds like and what I had to do to turn it off

tried power off from console... no go
tried power off from wii pad... no go.
had to pull power cable from back of unit to shut it off.

The same exact thing started happening with mines. After I unplugged the power, I turned it back on but I would get no image on the TV. The gamepad would read something along the lines of " Can't read Wii U, move gamepad closer to console"
A bunch of people are reporting this problem. Hopefully it is a software issue and not a hardware problem, but Nintendo hasn't said anything about it yet.
Yeah, I hope they fix this soon. Hopefully it doesn't have anything to do with the guy that accidentaly hacked the Miiverse while looking over his settings menu.
I got the same problem. I dont think its hardware though. Cause you can eject the disc (that will still work) use the tv function on the gamepad. If the wii's power button is controled by a software switch (software activates the on off function) instead of a physical switch then this would indicate to me that the software itself has crashed...or maybe I am nuts. I love the descritpion by the way.
Mine did too, 3 times in one evening within the hour. Could not find any official word from nintendo, would feel better if they acknowledged the issue and said a patch is on the way. The only thing I heard was that this is a rare issue and to remove from power source, which makes me think it is a hardware defect and makes me want to return the two day system to the store.
Mine does that too. Hope they acknowledge the issue. Did not get the warranty cause I never get one and hoping that wasnt a mistake.
The console itself comes with a 1-year warranty from Nintendo. I'm wondering if all the people having these issues are the ones that connected the Wii U online. I know the Miiverse was hacked and Nintendo took care of it but who knows what damage was done.
See I have no idea how the mii vers would affect it. Unless the guy figured out how to change miis to reflect something they had in beta ![]()
this happens when i play nsmbu
you will have to send the wii u in for repairs to do so call nintendo at 1-800-255-3700.
Mine just did it for the third time. If they really need to be repaired, nintendo is going to get a LOT of broken consoles in the mail...
If this item requires a physical repair can you just tell me what part in it is defective?
I got the Horn of Death too! (HOD) That's my new term for it ![]()

I'm also having the same problem. Twice in 5 minutes while playing NSMBU. ![]()
Everybody sorry you have to send it for repairs this is a step backwards for nintendo.
Have you downloaded and installed both the system update and the game update?
Just wanted to add my voice to the choir. I also have had my Wii U hard-lock and make the terrible tone. Once while playing Donkey Kong and once while playing Yoshis Cart in Nintendoland. I want to keep playing but I think I'll leave my Wii U off until there's offical word from Nintendo on a fix. Perhaps this? http://mynintendonews.com/2012/11/21/wii-u-freezing-patch-coming-next-week/
I read that too, Im just really hoping its true, and not the person just saying that to give up our hopes,
I really like this system, and I hate to see it go cuz of faulty issues, I still think it has to do with something about online, but im not sure at all.
Yeah so am I . I would really apreciate it if after this comes out we all come back and let each other know if its still happening. If its not we know we are all fixed. Since this problem is random would be best to have multiple opinions.
Same problem here. I'm sure Nintendo is scrambling to figure this one. Sounds like a pretty common issue :(
Same problem. Unplugged 3 times and it still locks up. The HORN sucks!
it sounds to me it has some thang to do with nintendo land cause mine did the same so far its only been nintendo land
keeps happening to me for some reason every time i play nintendoland after a few seconds the whole thing freezes on me with a loud siren i tried cleaning the disc and seeing if it worked but it did no effect
*** I think I have a temporary solution if THEMK's solution does not work ***
Delete your network connection: Settings -> Network (first icon), Press X (Connections), click on all connections and then delete the settings for now.
OR
Try rebooting your router/modem setup
OR
Buy the official USB to ethernet accessory (UNTESTED SOLUTION)
Based on what I've read everywhere, it looks like a problem with Miiverse integration or the Nintendo Network. I hard crashed 5 times in a row while I was trying different settings and allowing for a cooloff period of 15 minutes each time unplugged. Same issue.
I restarted my router, and things were going well for a while, the next day, it started again. Since I made the assumption that it may be the router, as it consistently crashed on games that use Miiverse integration: NSMBU, ZombiU, NintendoLand, CoD.
When I played Tank! Tank! Tank!, I did not receive a crash. Went back to NintendoLand, and had a crash within 10 minutes of trying the Metroid game.
Once I removed the network settings all games, of course now without network, are working no problems. Definitely would keep checking every day next week for a system update, if none are found remove the settings. Keep on playing.
I hope this helps.
Ethernet solution does not work. I am using the adapter but like you mentioned in your post disconnecting the ethernet seems to be a good work around so you can play the game without it freezing.
And one more to the list... When I play Nintendo Land, it 's locking up on me the same way.
The thing is, we've been playing 2 player NL all week with no problems. Today we were playing 3 players (instead of the normal 2 players) when we saw it.
We played two matches of Luigi's Mansion and 1 of Metroid before we hit it for the very first time. We thought it was a fluke. After having to pull the power, we started Metroid up again. This time it locked up before we could even start a game. After another unplugging/re-plugging, it froze at the mini game selection screen. We switched to SMB U, and so far no problems...
I hope it's for NL only... And that it's patched soon!

Yep my WiiU is not useless. I can only do anything for about 1 minute before it freezes and then you can't hard reset which is the first device I have seen where that fails. I am extremely frustrated.
Yup, happening to me now too. Can't play anything on Nintendo Land now without getting this horn of death. I will be calling Nintendo soon to see what they have to say about this. Glad to see I'm not the only one here. That sound makes me nuts!
I've heard that deleting the Internet connection may help with this, so that may be a temporary solution worth trying to see if it helps. ![]()
Happened 5 times in a row within Nintendoland. Happens when loading up a minigame. System worked without a hitch for 4 days, and now it's unplayable. Tried to call Nintendo Support, was on hold for 20 minutes. This sucks. I'm wondering if I should return the system as it's still within first 7 days of purchase. (I haven't bought anything on eShop yet).
Recently I've had the system lock up more than a few times while playing and I've discovered why.
The OS has a bug in it with Miiverse.
All the games esp Nintendoland have MiiVerse intregated into it and the system locks up when trying to play.
The fix for the Wii U owners is to either wait until next week for Nintendo's patch to come out or
1. Turn off your system,
2. Reboot
3. Disconnect network connection
4. Reboot
5. Reconnect to network connection
Those steps will cause the system to delete the Miiverse cache and redownload. Temporary fix until Nintendo's patch.
You may also want to try setting the MiiVerse to use English only. Some other users on here are stating that is the fix.
You should see a 3DS when it crashes, It does the same exact thing, even the Manual volume slider fails to work. It sounds like one of those disorienting sound devices that the Military uses as weapons. I am getting the Wii U soon and hopefully, they fix it. I am afraid to use headphones while playing GBA ambassador games on the 3ds or putting it into sleep while in a game because of the noise. If Nintendo does not fix this problem on the Wii U (its still not fixed for 3ds), I will be afraid to use the headphone jack on the gamepad for netflix and amazon prime as i could lose my hearing it it does the "Horn" while using it in gamepad only mode.
I havent turned on my system lately; I thought a patch would be available this week like some member on reddit had reported but nothing yet. To be on the safe side, im going to leave it off until a patch has arrived. I bought my system for the online. Not to not have online... if i wanted that.. i would have stuck with the wii.
Add me to the list of those that have this issue.
I'd used the USB wireless addapter from my Wii on the Wii U, so when the horn started up again yesterday I just unplugged the adapter after unplugging the console. That has fixed the problem for the time being.
My Wii U keeps freezing everytime I start it up... While it's loading the Wii U interface on the screen and gamepad, it just freezes and plays the horn of death. Before this happened I tried installing a netflix update(It was the first time I was going to try the app) When the download finished it went into the install process and quickly gave me a message that the update data for the netflix was corrupted and it told me to go into the system memory and delete the data so I can redownload it once again. I went itno the system's memory and didn't find any data from netflix, only 2 hulu files(didn't even use it) and my black ops save file. Once I exited the system settings, when it was loading back into main menu it just froze and I couldn't shut off the system by pressing the power button, I had to uplug the power cord. Now everytime I turn on my Wii U about 5-10 seconds in about the time where its loading the interface, it freezes. I can't get past it to configure any settings or anything. Even if there is an update thats going to fix this, I wouldn't even be able to download it because I can't get past the startup screen. Contacting Nintendo tomorrow to replace it. I bought the Deluxe set just this morning, and this happens.
I've also tried disconnecting my router so my Wii can't go online, but still no solution.
I tried turning on my Wii U tonight; look what happened...
everytime i turn it on it froze
