Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Hey guys! I'm really enjoying my Wii U so far, but I have one problem.

While I was just playing Donkey Kong's Crash Course, my game froze and started making a loud buzzing sound. I had to unplug my console to get it to power down.

Then I started the game up again and it immediately did the same thing upon trying to play Yoshi's Fruit Cart.

My system is up to date, and the game disk isnt dirty. Anyone else having this issue?

I'm having the exact same problem, I don't know if it's my console or the game. Because when I was on the OS everything was fine.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

So I fixed it, you have to make sure your console has room to "breath" because if it's in a small area it will most likely freeze.

Yeah same here. The system doesn't freeze at all when I'm on Miiverse or the internet, etc... But when I play a game it happens.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Having the same problem with nintendo land freezing. Here is something that seem's to work. If you load the game when the power is off, and let the system start up that way, I haven't had it to freeze. If the power is already on and I load the game and go to it. That's when I have trouble with the freezing and have to unplug. I've tried this about 6 time's, and so far haven't had any freeze problem's when I load game first. Although you should be able to load it either way. I'm going to give it a few day's before I call nintendo. If your having this problem, you may want to try this.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Mine started freezing up from the setup. It took about a hundred try's to get it though the set up. I even called in and was ready to ship it back. Finally it started working but it has frozen a few times while playing. It's is not with the games. It will happen anywhere. It seems like it might be in the system ans not easily fixed without return to Nintendo.  Mine has space to breathe. And did it before and after software update. Although I have always kept it upright on the legs? I will try flat but not getting my hopes high.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I had the same problem yesterday afternoon. Twice while playing ZombiU and once during Nintendo Land. I have not had the chance to use my Wii U much since then, but I have been afraid to start up a game for fear that this problem may cause more permanent damage. I called Nintendo's tech support line and got a repair number, but I hate sending it in when I just got it!

I've thought about giving it more space so it has plenty of room for ventilation, but when it froze, I felt of the console and it didn't feel hot at all--just like a normal warm feeling. Regardless, it has the same amount of room as my Wii, 360, PS3, and Blu-Ray player, so I don't see how this could be the problem...

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Ok, so I tried pulling my Wii U out of my entertainment stand yesterday to give it more room to breathe. I stuck in a Wii disc (I was curious to see if there was any upscaling as some have claimed) and tested it out. I didn't run the game long enough to freeze it, but oddly enough the disc continued to spin even after I went back to the Wii Menu and then the Wii U Menu. While on the Wii U Menu, it ended up freezing again and I had to unplug it!

As I said, the disc was still running while I was on the Wii U Menu, so I'm thinking the drive is part of the issue. Granted, you can still eject the disc, as mentioned above, so perhaps it's a software/firmware issue related to the drive?

At any rate, I'll probably be sending my Wii U in to Nintendo at the beginning of next week. I've been anxious to show my family during Thanksgiving, so I'm not to keen before sending it in sooner than that. Hopefully they'll be able to get something figured out quickly.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I would recomend just calling the store were you bought it and let them know whats happening tell them no one knows if its hardware or software and ask them if they will extend the exchange time(ask a manager get a name and write it down) I did that so even if its the machine I can get it exchanged. I think it may be software related though cause my machine runs stone cold. No hot air at all.

That's not going to work for me - I already transfered all my old Wii content over. I'm stuck with this console, good or bad.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I honestly just think it freezes random on any game if you play it long  enough. I talked to nintendo. (Who by the  way was really nice)and honestly they just dont have enough data on  this atm. They dont know if its hardware or software because they are  told what to do they are not the ones that really fix the issues. I  found one of the repair centers and am waiting for a call back to see if  they are getting a lot of these in and if so if there are any actual  damaged parts in the machines. I have only ever seen a hardware freeze a  handfull of times in my life. One was a defective hard drive, the other  was a mb with swolen capacitors and the last was over heating. But the  machines doesnt run hot so I doubt thats it.

So far I've only locked up in Nintendoland, only with three players, and not every time. It happens 1 time out of 5, perhaps, and it seems only during the tutorials (once it was when I was on the Train flying up into the sky). One and two players seems fine.

It's a hard lock too. Hitting the power button does nothing. Holding the power button does nothing - I have to go to the cord and pull it out, wait 10 seconds or so and start up again.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

This has now gone from bad to worse for me. Before I could start up my Wii U and browse Miiverse and the eShop without any problems of it freezing. The only time it seemed that it froze was when the disc drive had been spinning for 20 minutes or so. Yesterday, though, I booted up my Wii U and within a few moments of the Miis flooding the Warawara Plaza, it froze--no disc in the system. I've tried it more than once since then and it's always the same. I'm quite depressed that I can't play my new system.

So now I'm trying to decide if I'm going to send in my Wii U to Nintendo, or if I can hunt down one in town (I've heard there are a few stores that have them) and then just return mine. Either way, it's a mess.

I'm having the same problem, system running cool, and my game froze twice in a row! Both times I had to unplug the system from the back to turn it off. Haven't even been playing it long, and it's in a cool, dry, place. It seems only the games are freezing becase I'm typing this on the Wii U Gamepad and I'm not having any problems! Please let me know if their is a way to fix this. Thank you.

Wii U frozen at opening logo screen

At the very first start up, my new Wii U Deluxe has frozen at the Wii U logo screen. It will not progress beyond this point.

The power button goes from red to blue when turned on, but when I press and hold the blue button the unit doesn't turn off (go to red). It needs to be unplugged from AC and plugged in again to get back to the red LED off state, not that that is the same issue.

When I attempt to sync, the sync screen appears on the game pad, but the code does not appear on the TV screen.

Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah i really hope nintendo releses a software update to patch this.nintnedo land has frozen 4 times on me at random spots playing the mini games.so far on metroid blast and the zelda one.But yet i play new super mario bros u and it does not freeze at all.it froze before the day one update(just got stuck on the white screen after you hit new user after turning it on for the first time) then after the day one update although it didnt freeze it told me nintendo land was a invalid disc and had to restart the system to reconize the disc to play it!Miivere or any of the system stuff and apps havent frozen on me.Glad i googled the issue and looks like im not the only one having this freezing problem. Also i dont have my system in a enclosed space and it is in a totally open space plus it feels ice cold.I really dont want to return it or send it in for repair when i just got it days ago and had to wait on a waiting list to get a hold of the deluxe set.i know new system launches have bugs when they come out and what not but nintendo please release a sysstem update to fix this issue for us please!

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I have gotten this as well, playing with a bunch of friends. We played for about an hour - but after that, every time we entered a game, the wii u would freeze and buzz (4 times in a row on luigi's / animal crossing). I'm letting it cool down before trying again - the fan sounded like it was trying pretty hard. I hope Nintendo is looking into this, and I hope it's a software issue.

I'm going to try and reproduce this, and then start turning things off (wi-fi connection, wii motes, ...etc) to see if it helps. The best we can do as a community, is to give Nintendo as much information as we can - and at the moment, that means trying to find out if we can reproduce this on a software level.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Unfortunately (and fortunately), I have not been able to reproduce this after 6+ hours of NintendoLand (playing every game multiple times within that time frame). I will continue playing and report back if anything happens! (first world problems.. eh?)

It's great to hear people (below) having great success (turning off their internet connection / miiverse, re-installing games patches).

And I've realized I'm addicted to Donkey Kong's Crash Course.

I've had the same issue. I read on another messageboard to disconnect your WIIU from the internet. I've tried this and so far I havent had this issue in the past 2 days. I think it might be miiverse server or something. Its inconvenient to have to disconnect from the internet and hopefully nintendo sends a patch to fix it soon, but at least you'll be able to play your games without freezing until it gets fixed.

I have found a possible fix for the just Nintendo Land Freezing.  What I did was go to storage and delete just the patch updates for Nintendo Land.  Then I reinstalled the patch and I have not had any problems since.  Just looks like a patch intalling error.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Yeah, I'm having this same issue. I played  Nintendoland yesterday for about half an hour, and it was fine. But  today, as soon as Miis started coming into the plaza, it froze, and it  now freezes every time I start it as soon as the Miis come in. I am  currently trying the fix that THEMK offered, which was to delete the  patch data for Nintendoland and then re-update the game, and I will  follow up here to let everyone know if that is a viable fix.

**EDIT**

So far, the fix has worked incredibly. I don't really know whether it will work for those who have been having the issue with multiple games, but for those that have had it solely with NintendoLand, go into Settings, memory, and delete the update data for NintendoLand. Then procede to play the game, it will re-update, and it should be good to go.

Perhaps with the other games, you just need to do the same thing.

Thanks THEMK for the fix!

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

*** I think I have a temporary solution if THEMK's solution does not work ***

Delete your network connection: Settings -> Network (first icon), Press X (Connections), click on all connections and then delete the settings for now.

OR

Try rebooting your router/modem setup

OR

Buy the official USB to ethernet accessory (UNTESTED SOLUTION)

Based on what I've read everywhere, it looks like a problem with Miiverse integration or the Nintendo Network. I hard crashed 5 times in a row while I was trying different settings and allowing for a cooloff period of 15 minutes each time unplugged. Same issue.

I restarted my router, and things were going well for a while, the next day, it started again. Since I made the assumption that it may be the router, as it consistently crashed on games that use Miiverse integration: NSMBU, ZombiU, NintendoLand, CoD.

When I played Tank! Tank! Tank!, I did not receive a crash. Went back to NintendoLand, and had a crash within 10 minutes of trying the Metroid game.

Once I removed the network settings all games, of course now without network, are working no problems. Definitely would keep checking every day next week for a system update, if none are found remove the settings. Keep on playing.

I hope this helps.

I just created a forum account to let everyone know I'm having this same issue.  It is completely frustrating. I just had all my friends come over to play Nintendoland and it won't get past 5 minutes without a hard freeze.  The strange thing is that the game was working fine for me a day or two after launch.  Tonight was the first night I had 2 extra controllers plugged in so I don't know if that created the problem?  Sounds like a network issue or patch issue from what some folks are mentioning.

Try loading the game first when the power is off, and let the system start that way, this has worked for me, if I load game after power has been on a while have the freeze problem, so far I done it that way 6 times and hasn't froze once, but will freeze if I load game after system is already on.

I just started getting this today in Nintendo Land.

I got it three times in a row and tried the 'delete internet settings' and it seems to have worked... so far anyway.  I've read somewhere else that it has something to do with 'forgein text strings' and that setting things to 'English Only' also works, but I haven't tried that.

Hopefully there will be some offical word about a patch... the problem seems to be growing.

We had a bunch of people come over today to show off the new Wii U and about an hour into NintendoLand the game crashes with this loud horn sound. We reset the system and tried again only to play 5 minutes and have the thing crash again. This happened SEVEN TIMES! It's so frustrating and embarrassing as we've been telling our friends all week how great this thing was. What is going on?

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I've just recently been experiencing the same issues with Nintendo Land freezing. It occurred once when starting a minigame, so I unplugged the power cord from the console and turned on the Wii U and attempted to play the exact same game. The system froze again, and it occurred again for 2 more attempts. I reinstalled the Nintendo Land update and tried again and it still froze. Power cycled my router and yet again it froze when starting the same game. Finally I unplugged the router and started the console. After 6 freezes, this was the only attempt that didn't result in the console locking up when the console was not connected to the Internet. Just to be sure I attempted 2 more times with the router off and didn't not experience any freezing. I am almost positive this is some software issue when the system is connected to the Internet.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I am having the same issue.

3 freezes & a horn-like noise from the system.

I have done the same troubleshooting techniques.

I have had no problems with this until tonight.

I'm really surprised that Nintendo does not have :

1. Some form of "Error Report System" built into the Wii U's system.

2. A better means of rebooting the game system other than "unplug the system from the wall".

I suppose it's the old game of hurry up and wait for a patch/system update?

Not exactly what my daughter and I had in mind for an additional form of quality time, but that's technology, I guess.

Nintendo Land has worked fine for me...until today. I too am experiencing the hard freezes and the buzzing. I tried to re-update, but it still locks up. Everything else works on my console except for Nintendo Land.I don't know if this is important, but after I re-updated, the time it took to freeze up was longer. As in, Nintendo Land didn't freeze up right away.

I hope Nintendo fixes this soon.

The system is really starting to frustrate me now.  Everytime I try to connect to Miiverse now and click on the miiverse icon, it just gets hung up on the loading screen.  I've also noticed that I'm getting completely dropped off my router for some reason.  Like I go to my laptop and see that it loses its connection with the router and internet everytime I try to connect to Miiverse on my Wii U.  So I have to restart the router and then the same thing happens.  Any idea what might be causing that?  I assume the Miiverse options are within teh Miiverse icon once the Miiverse loads up...

Anyone know why i can't even load up Miiverse now without my router dropping my internet connection?  I wanted to try that English only setting but I can't even get connected to the Miiverse.  Ugh.....

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I'm going to try the English setting fix.

A temporary fix I've done that may work for you:

Recently I've had the system lock up more than a few times while playing and I've discovered why.

The OS has a bug in it with Miiverse.

All the games esp Nintendoland have MiiVerse intregated into it and the system locks up when trying to play.

The fix for the Wii U owners is to either wait until next week for Nintendo's patch to come out or

1. Turn off your system,

2. Reboot

3. Disconnect network connection

4. Reboot

5. Reconnect to network connection

Those steps will cause the system to delete the Miiverse cache and redownload. Temporary fix until Nintendo's patch.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Same thing happened to me. I got it Sunday afternoon, set it up and turned it on later that night. I had to install that 2 hour, 5 GB (supposedly, or 1 GB as others have debated) update, which I fell asleep through halfway, but managed to wake up not too long after the update installed, luckily. Fast forward to Monday night, where, after setting up what I didn't Sunday/early Monday morning, I popped in Nintendo Land, installed its 20 minute update, and got to playing it.

About 5 minutes into the game when I got acquainted with the controls and went to play the Takamaru's Ninja Castle (I believe that's what it's called) attraction, as I was being introduced to it, it froze with that loud HOD (horn of death, as some call it [aka SHOD: soccer horn of death]). I was able to eject the disc, turn the Game Pad off and on, but I couldn't reset via the power button being held down. Instead, as numerous others have mentioned, I was only able to power off my Wii U via unplugging it.

Immediately after this problem, I researched to see if others were having this problem, or if I was alone (on the built-in web browser, as a matter of fact). You know the answer, which leads me to think that it's a firmware issue, 99.9% sure. So, ready to give it another try as I've read that some have had the freezing only once (that is, until I checked the Tech Support Forums a bit ago) and that was it so far, I went to play Nintendo Land. This time, after about one minute into the game where I was walking around ready to try the ninja attraction again, it froze with that oh so lovely HOD sound. I unplugged it, turned it on to get to the main menu, went back to the web browser to check on this issue, and then turned it off. And its stayed that way since then for fear of freezing it a third time in a row as I don't want to keep doing this to my brand new, unplayable Wii U.

As mentioned earlier, I was able to browse around the main menu along with the web browser; I was also able to check out MiiVerse without a hitch. This problem seems to only plague me in Nintendo Land, especially when I want to go to the HOD attraction! And, as mentioned, I haven't touched, nor am I going to touch my Wii U until the software patch, that has been rumored for next week, has been released and all is (hopefully, and should be) well. It's sad and sucks that I can't play my Wii U after getting it and having to update to get something that I feel should've been preinstalled, let alone not being able to play over Thanksgiving weekend. Oh well, it's not like Nintendo intentionally let this happen. Plus, pretty much every product launch has its hiccups, with this being Nintendo's biggest one from my lifetime history of buying their products.

P.S. I saw the Nintendo Land commercial the other day and I couldn't help but wonder why all of those people playing Nintendo Land didn't drop their controllers, cover their ears, and yell "Someone unplug it. MAKE IT STOP!!!" from the HOD from the freezing!

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

If you go to Miiverse and go into the settings and change it to English only in the language menu it will not freeze, remember go into the Miiverse then enter the setting not the system settings...

Quite honestly, I'm afraid of freezing my Wii U again for the 3rd time, and I'm not talking about (just) playing Nintendo Land, but, as others have suggested, just by simply being on the main menu! I'm honestly fine with waiting a couple more days for the *hopefully* permanent solution where I don't have to change a thing and just enjoy playing Nintendo Land like I should've been 5 nights ago, or ultimately 6 if I didn't need to spend 2 hours waiting for a system update of either 1 or 5 GB (I have a feeling it was just1 GB, for the record based on my past downloading experiences with download times of various file sizes on my [slow] network)...

Honestly though, if there's no patch by the end of next week, I'll give it a try as I only have so long before my receipt expires for my Wii U and the new Sharp TV I bought just for it and I want to make sure that everything's working fine. I truly am confident, however, that Nintendo will be releasing that update within the first half of next week (between Monday and Wednesday).

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Man please don't deprive yourself of playing Nintendo Land and your Wii U

Its not gonna break and don't call Nintendo and set up a repair

Nintendo's network is getting killed, they are new at this, just change Mii-verse settings to English only and your find

It scared me too at first, but the Wii U never gets hot, its not an over-heating issue, just a network/update patch issue

Well, in the end, it was better to turn off the Internet connection and try it out. Lo and behold, I was able to play without issue! Since the problem seems to be with MiiVerse not recognizing special characters for foreign languages, for me, it was better not to mess with settings for MiiVerse and turning on "English Only", and just temporarily delete my Internet connection settings. Now, I can finally enjoy Nintendo Land like I should've been able to 6 nights ago!   If any of you are having issues, try staying disconnected from the Internet until Nintendo gives the Wii U some language lessons! Thanks for your help and to the others who gave this suggestion! Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to go throw some star blades at some paper ninjas, and do other Nintendo Landy stuff!

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Unfortunatly, for me it didn't help.

What works for me is to restricted viewing and postimg Miiverse from the Parent Control menu. I can use Miiverse in Nintendo Land from the beginning with no problems, longer than that I go back to restricted Miiverse.

I can't get into Miiverse though.  It keeps loading forever and dropping me from my router.  I was able to get onto Miiverse without any hicccups earlier in the week so I don't think my router is the issue.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

So I called Nintendo just now and spoke to a gentleman who was quite nice. He said that it is a well known issue, and that there will be a patch out in December. Now, he did say that he was unsure as to what this patch entailed, and that it will be very broad. I would hope that if it were a known issue to Nintendo, then they would fix it in this upcoming patch. I was advised to wait until the patch, and then if it still happens afterwards, call them back.

Guess now we just play the waiting game...

Same problem here, only experiencing it in Nintendo Land.  Freezing stopped happening in-game when I deleted my Internet connection.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I gave up trying to play Nland over the weekend after a bunch of freezes. I'm going to try the english setting deal you guys said see how it goes. It has been mentioned a bunch but another OS update should be coming this week to elimiate the errors. I don't understand why mods don't post anything here?

Not sure how true it is but hopefully it's real. I'd like to play the game it's fun for the 5 min I can squeeze in before crashing.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

When i called Nintendo about the issue, they didn't seem to know anything about a patch next week, they did however say that there definitely is one coming out ion December. Apparently it'll be smaller than the Day 1 patch, and will fix a broad array of bugs going on. I didn't get a straight answer whether this would be fixed on it or not, but if this is as wide-spread as the internet is making it look, then they MUST be wanting to get a fix as soon as possible.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

So, the "English Only Fix" worked on my Wii U for the last 4 days, but tonight I start up NintendoLand and ..... BZZZZZZZZZ! Oh dear. This is really weird. I'm going to disable internet connection and try again.

How can a fix work well for a couple of days and then fry again? Must have something to do with server/internet integration. Ho hum.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

This happened to me 4 times. The fix for me was to disable WI-FI on my  WII U. I read somewhere else that this could possibly be with a certain  string of characters that a MII will post that will crash Nintendo Land  when it loads up. I am not saying this is the cause I just read this  somewhere. They also another fix could be only allowing English MII's. I  have no idea how to do this though.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

Yep.  Bought the system with the game last week to the day.  Only played the game a few times, because i'm mostly playing Super Mario Bro's.  No issue's with Mario, but Nintendoland freezes and has buzzing noise.  Tried to delete update and reinstall it, but failed to work.  I haven't tried disconnecting the internet yet, might try that tomorrow.  Could you imagine something like this happening in cartridge games back in the 90's?  I'm tired of patches.....make the game right the first time and we won't have to deal with this..... alright i'm stepping off my soapbox now.

Re: Nintendo Land freezing and buzzing?

I had this issue last night and fixed it completely by just deleting my network connection and playing NintendoZone offline.  The problem is that Nintendo Network was being overloaded with all the new folks coming online due to Wii U being released in other territories.  Nintendo needs to fix it, and they might have, because today it has been fine whereas last night it would freeze almost constantly before I deleted the network connection, after which I played just fine for hours.
