I have two wireless networks: a 2.4 GHz data network and 5 GHz video network. My Wii will only recognize the 2.4 band (whether I broadcast the SSID or use manual setup). Does anyone know if the Wii's internal wireless adapter can support the 5 Ghz band? It seems odd that it wouldn't given that both are ideal for streaming HD videos.
The Wii can only operate using the 802.11b and 802.11g standards, which both use the 2.4GHz band. The 802.11n standard is the one that can operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
Thank you for that information. Is there any hope that Nintendo will upgrade its internal adapter to wireless-n to take advantage of the 5 GHz band? I'm not familiar with how proactive the company is on such matters.
Can't say for certain, but I wouldn't expect an upgraded wireless chip until Nintendo releases a second-generation Wii because upgrading to 802.11n would require a whole new wireless card and thus a whole new system for consumers. There has been no word on a 2nd gen Wii yet.
